IET-Sri Lanka Field Visit to Upper Kotmale Hydro power Plant

It is a  hydroelectric plants which was recently connected to the grid,it is in Talawakele, within the Nuwara Eliya District, in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. The project was initially planned in 1968.The environmental impact assessment report was completed in September 1994, with the final design report completed in March 1995.

There has been  key issues associated with this  project, which includes impact on St. Clair's Falls aesthetics due to stream flow reductions, impact for the  people, possible effects on ground water due to tunnelling, impacts on downstream water uses due to de-watering of streams, and impacts on biodiversity. These impacts led large delays in project development. I got the chance to participate in a field visit organised by the IET  Sri Lanka Network.

12th Sunday August 2012

Went to a free seminar organised by ESoft  regarding the BIT final year projects. It was interesting and unlike in any other institute I felt the quality of the session. Still having doubts whether to do or not to do the final year of my IT external degree. I have already made up my mind to go for the field of Electrical Engineering, so my heart tells me not to worry about the BIT, also we are struggling with the FYP. So will the BIT project be another burden to me??

Still the universities are closed due to the strike of the academic staff, I feel both sides being extremists on this, lecturers and the government. It looks like it will not be opened for another few weeks. How ever Rotaract club is organized Are You Ready 2012 starting from tomorrow. I keep my figures cross, hoping a company might be interested, but that should not be my motive, I believe if you are worth they will come looking for you, but still its worth trying.

So I came around 12.00pm to Borelasgamuwa, where I stayed for the past 3 years of my stay at the university. And write few post of the events I involved during past years, which I felt is useful thing. Then I read my Google reader and then read few blog posts.

In the evening had a bath and washed my cloths, which I couldn't do yesterday due to raining. And again tried to clean my lap and organised stuff in the hard disk. As I am affraid my computer will have to format soon.

South Asian Present Around The World 2011

During last year (in 2011), we Sri Lanka got the chance to host the South Asian level finals of the IET event "Present Around The World". Day before the event myself and some collegues of mine (Thenuwara & Mewantha) were given the chance to take the competitors around the City of Colombo. It was a sudden decision and I reluctantly accepted the instruction as we were not prepared at all. Some how we hire a van and with our pockets with few thousand bucks we started the journey. We went to few places and drops the competitors at the hotel soon as they had to prepare for the competition tomorrow.
On the day of the event we saw a huge competion and equally talented presenters demonstrating there kills. There were competitors from Maldives, India, pakistan and Sri Lanka. The winner  Mr.Muhammad Saad Ali from Lahore, second place went to Mr.Syed Nabeel Mehdi  and third place went to Ms.Ridhima Pathak.

I met some nice friends there during the event.I want to recall few of them to thank them for bearing any difficulties and being so friendly. It was them who made the event so memorable.

  • AC and DC Motors
  • Cranes
  • Cathodic Protection

Annual Gavel Trip 2011

Date: 12th Saturday June 2011
Location : Kukule Ganga, Matugama Sri Lanka

This time for the annual trip of Gavel Club of University of Moratuwa, it was decided to go to Matugama kukuleganga. The main objective of these annualy organised trips  is to get the members to mix with other members and build the trust and respect among members.
This key things we did here that recall my memory is the Annual bath and the team activities. Also for the first time in Sri Lanka we were able to held a Gavel meeting in a river (yes in a river), where my collegue demonstrated his speech which he had prepared for the AIBS 2011 (All Island Best Speaker).
As I recall it was about a Foot ball manager and how you should follow your dreams.

Speech Olympiad 2010

Public speaking became one of my passions the day I came for the first meeting of the Gavel Club in 2008. The way people talked, the way people used references of what they had read, or experienced in their speeches were actually beautiful. In the first day I started another job of collecting famous quotes. And today I have a nice collection of quotes from various people.

Speech Olympiad is the Intra-university  Speech Contest which is organised annually by the Gavel club. This was my first Speech Olympiad contest I have participated both in organizing and competing.
This is the signature event of the Gavel Club of University of Moratuwa and one of the most awaited events in the university calender.Learned a lot from the event. The winner was Pasan Pethiyagoda, a fellow Electrical Engineering undergraduate.

You can read more about the event held from the following link.
